Timur Oziev sentenced to 19 months of imprisonment

In the Stavropol Territory, the court found Timur Oziev, a participant of a rally in Magas, guilty of assaulting a fighter of the National Guard of Russia for political reasons.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Timur Oziev, a native of the Kantyshevo village, was detained on April 17, 2019. Timur Oziev claims that he grabbed a shield of the National Guard fighter in an attempt to prevent a clash between activists and law enforcers, but the judge doubted the activist's peaceful intentions.

On March 26, residents of Ingushetia extended a protest action in a square in Magas without a sanction from the authorities, and that resulted in clashes with law enforcers on the other day. In early April, the Ingush police began to arrest oppositionists.

At the today's hearing of the Zheleznovodsk City Court, the activist noted that he pleaded guilty only partially. "I committed that act without any political hostility towards the leader of the republic and without any influence from anyone. I apologize to the victim and promise not to repeat mistakes in the future," the defendant said.

However, the court fully agreed with the public prosecutor's version. According to the decision pronounced at the court hearing, Timur Oziev grabbed the shield of the National Guard fighter, "while experiencing political hostility to the authorities of the republic" and acting "under the influence" of the organizers of the rally.

The activist was sentenced to a year and seven months of imprisonment in a penal colony.

Ruslan Khadjiev, an advocate of Timur Oziev, says that the defence has not yet decided whether to appeal against the verdict.
