ECtHR begins consideration of Georgian transgender's complaint

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) demanded from the Georgian authorities to explain their refusal to change a gender record in the passport of Nikolo Gviniashvili.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October 2019, Nikolo Gviniashvili appealed to the ECtHR with a complaint about the refusal of the Georgian authorities to change the gender record in his documents.

In 2014, Nikolo Gviniashvili who was born a woman, but identified oneself as a man since childhood, got a medical certificate with a diagnosis of transsexualism. At present, the transgender person has got all the biological characteristics typical for men, including appearance, but is recorded as a woman in the passport. This was stated on October 24, 2019, by the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association, an NGO representing the interests of Nikolo Gviniashvili.

The ECtHR has begun the consideration on the merits of the complaint filed by Nikolo Gviniashvili, reports the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association in its message sent today to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

In particular, the ECtHR demanded from the Georgian authorities to explain the grounds for their refusal to change the gender record in the Nikolo Gviniashvili's passport. The European Court has given the parties a period for reconciliation until March 4. In case if no reconciliation takes place, then the Georgian authorities will be given a 12-week period to present their position, the human rights defenders report.
