Colleagues of Ogtai Gyulyalyev concerned over plans to return him to Azerbaijan

The Heydar Aliyev Foundation decided to stop financing the Ogtai Gyulyalyev's stay at a clinic in Istanbul and to return him to Azerbaijan, where medical treatment might be less effective, the Committee against Repression and Torture voiced its fears on December 4.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 6, Ogtai Gyulyalyev, the coordinator of the Committee against Repression and Torture, fell victim to a road traffic accident and was transported by special plane to the clinic in Istanbul.

On October 29, in Baku, Ogtai Gyulyalyev, the coordinator of the Committee against Repression and Torture, was hospitalized after a press conference at which he outlined a plan for a campaign against torture. A car driver hit Ogtai Gyulyalyev at a pedestrian crossing, reported a son of the human rights defender. Azerbaijani oppositionists and human rights defenders have suggested that Ogtai Gyulyalyev was intentionally hit by a car.

Ogtai Gyulyalyev still stays in serious condition, and doctors of the Istanbul hospital are fighting for his life, human rights defenders report.

According to them, starting from December 10, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, which had been allocating funds for the Ogtai Gyulyalyev's medical treatment for more than a month, has suspended funding for his treatment. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation proposes to stop the medical treatment in Turkey and continue it in Azerbaijan. The human rights defenders say they doubt the effectiveness of medical care in Azerbaijan.

The Committee against Repression and Torture appealed to international human rights organizations with a request to support further medical treatment of Ogtai Gyulyalyev at the Turkish clinic, the agency "Turan" reported on December 4.
