Armenian priest killed in Syria

Ovsep Petoyan, a spiritual pastor of the Armenian Catholic community of Qamishli, and his father were shot dead in the north-east of Syria. The responsibility for the killings was claimed by the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court.

Ovsep Petoyan, a rector of the Armenian Catholic Church in the border Syrian city of Qamishli, and his father were killed on the road leading from the province of Hasek to Deir ez-Zor.

The priest was heading to Deir ez-Zor to examine the reconstruction of a local Armenian Catholic Church building, the "Regionmonitor" reports with reference to its sources.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Armenian authorities called on the international community to protect the rights of national and religious minorities, who in October found themselves in the zone of military operations in Syria.
