Family of schoolgirl who perished in Baku find sentence to teacher too soft

A court in Baku has sentenced Sevinj Abbasova, a former school principal, to restriction of liberty, finding her guilty under the case of an eighth-grader's death. Relatives of the casualty decided to seek imprisonment for the former school principal.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the above Baku eighth-form schoolgirl died on April 6 in the city clinical centre, where she was taken after an attempted suicide. The incident occurred on April 4 in the school territory. As the girl's parents have cleared out, she became an object of aggressive peers' attacks; while school teachers, knowing about it, failed to take any action.

On October 24, the Sabail District Court of Baku found the former school principal, Sevinj Abbasova, guilty under Articles 143 (leaving in danger) and 314.2 (negligence that resulted in victim's death) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan and sentenced her to two years and 2.5 months of freedom restraint, a court source told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The girl's mother disagrees with the verdict; she treats it as excessively mild. "My daughter was insulted, tormented and persecuted, while the principal, despite our appeals, did nothing. I'm afraid to send my two younger children to school. At least she (the principal) should be imprisoned for two or three years; then, we'd have calmed down a bit," the woman told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Relatives intend to appeal against the verdict. "We'll seek for a [more severe] punishment for this woman," the grandmother of the deceased schoolgirl told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
