Rights defenders question education of Georgian Prosecutor General

Georgian NGOs have demanded to check the authenticity of the higher education diploma of Shalva Tadumadze, the country's Prosecutor General, who takes part in the contest for the post of Supreme Court Judge. The dates of his study given in his diploma fail to coincide with the time of work of the university he had graduated from.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 4, the High Council of Justice defined, by secret ballot, 20 candidates for Judges of the Supreme Court of Georgia. Oppositionists have treated Shalva Tadumadze's participation in the contest as the desire of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the leader of the ruling "Georgian Dream" Party, to take control over the judiciary branch of power.

The Coalition "For Independent and Transparent Judiciary" has called to run an inquiry and clear out whether Shalva Tadumadze's diploma of higher legal education is genuine.

"If it's defined that the diploma is a fake, then, the parliament should launch the impeachment procedure," says the NGOs' statement at the disposal of the "Caucasian Knot".

The statement explains that the doubts of the authenticity of Tadumadze's diploma arose because the document indicated 1993 as the year he entered the university, while it was registered only in 1994.
