Activists in Moscow and Saint Petersburg commemorate Anna Politkovskaya

Residents of Moscow laid flowers at the house, where 13 years ago, Anna Politkovskaya, an observer of the "Novaya Gazeta", was shot dead; and Petersburg residents held a massive picket in Anna's memory.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that for 13 years, investigators failed to find the customers of Anna Politkovskaya's murder.

Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead near the elevator in the apartment building, where she lived in Moscow on October 7, 2006. She gave her last interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent an hour and a half before her death.

The Amnesty International (AI) has held an action in memory of Anna Politkovskaya on the anniversary of her assassination. On October 7, AI activists and volunteers laid flowers at the house No. 8 in Lesnaya Street, where the journalist was killed.

"Anna had done more than anyone else to solve hundreds of crimes and human rights violations committed in Chechnya during the second military campaign and after it. Our duty is to preserve the memory of Anna, to find and call to account all those responsible for her terrible murder," said Natalia Zvyagina, Director of the AI's Russian representative office, whose words are quoted on the AI's website.

Flowers were also laid at the editorial office of the "Novaya Gazeta", where Anna Politkovskaya's memorial plaque is installed.

On October 7, residents of Saint Petersburg held a mass picket in Troitskaya Square.

"All these years, we gather on this day in the same place to commemorate Anna, pay tribute to her memory, demand the search and punishment of the organizers and customers of this murder, who have not yet been found. We'll go on gathering until this happens," Boris Vishnevsky, the head of the "Yabloko" faction in the Legislative Assembly of Saint Petersburg, said on air of the "Saint Petersburg's Echo" Radio Station.
