The need to recognize genocide of Armenians gets ever wider support in the world

"In case Turkey joins the European Union, the system of values which forms the foundation of the entity may be jeopardized. From this viewpoint, Turkey represents a greater threat for Europe than any other country. This threat is more serious than the consequences which may be expected from deterioration of relations with Turkey." This has been stated by Vaan Ovannisian, vice-speaker of the Armenian National Congress, member of the ARFD Bureau, who welcomes the decision of the French National Congress on the adoption of a law stipulating criminal punishment for the  denial of genocide of Armenians.

The decision of the French National Congress has also been welcomed by Vardan Oskanian, minister of foreign affairs of Armenia. "The decision is a natural continuation of the fundamental and decisive protection by France of humane and historical rights and values," states Vardan Oskanian.

Aram I, Catholicos of the Grand Cilician House, has stated that all efforts aimed at denying the genocide may open the doors for more genocides.

On October 13, two major marches of youth took place in Yerevan, ending in front of the French embassy. The demonstrators welcomed the decision of the country's National Congress.

On October 12, the French National Congress adopted the law on criminal responsibility for denying genocide of Armenians, with 106 ballots "for" and 19  "against".

France is the first country whose parliament adopted a law on criminal prosecution for non-recognition of genocide of Armenians. For reference, the countries which have recognized genocide of Armenians include France, Greece, Argentina, Russia, Canada, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Sweden,  Uruguay, Cyprus and others.
