Builders of Georgian railway tunnel quit after strike

More than 60 workers, who were building a railway tunnel between Eastern and Western Georgia, decided to quit after a failure to achieve their demands from the employer.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 5, workers in the Georgian village of Kvishkheti threatened to block the construction, if the contractor company did not provide them with safe working conditions and did not raise wages.

On January 22, 2018, an explosion occurred in a railway tunnel in the village of Bezhatubani in the Kharagaul District; three workers were injured. The New Trade Union of Railwaymen has claimed that 120 workers from Georgia and China work at a construction site under extremely adverse conditions.

On August 5, 20 workers quitted after fruitless negotiations with the contractor, said Vitaly Giorgadze, the chairman of the above trade union.

About 40 workers continued their strike in the morning; they still demanded to increase their wages up to 30 laris (about USD 10.3), and also to "preserve the additional pay of 140 laris (about USD 48.2) after 26 days of work."
