Body of policeman killed in Chechnya sent home

The body of the policeman from Novokuznetsk, killed in an attack on a police checkpoint in Chechnya, will be buried tomorrow in his homeland, reports the Department for Kemerovo of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). Investigators are engaged in questioning relatives and friends of the attacker, the Chechen MIA reports.

On July 1, the policeman was killed in the attack on the police checkpoint in the Achkhoi-Martan District. According to the MIA, the attacker stabbed the law enforcer with a knife, threw a grenade, and was killed by return fire. The Chechen MIA reported that the attacker was identified as Zelimkhan Musaev, a native of the village of Achkhoi-Martan, a drug addict married to a woman whose relatives were militants who had left for Syria. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov voiced a request to remove the police checkpoint where the attack had occurred.

The "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court, claimed responsibility for the attack on the police checkpoint. Former law enforcers interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" suggested that the IS claimed responsibility for the attack to promote its activities, and the incident could hardly be considered as a terror act.

The memorial service in memory of Police Sergeant Alexander Dvornikov, who was killed during the attack on the police checkpoint, was held on July 3.

Colleagues of the killed policeman said that he "proved to be a competent, well-trained employee." Alexander Dvornikov will be posthumously presented to a government award.

Investigators are busy to find out where the attacker got a combat grenade and an army bayonet.

It should be noted that earlier, human rights defenders have stated that mass police checks on the circle of contacts of suspected militants are accompanied by violations of the detainees' rights, and the detentions themselves do not have sufficient legal grounds.
