Azerbaijani SC refuses to release paralyzed activist Bunyadov

The defence of Abulfaz Bunyadov, a bedridden religious activist, has announced its intention to apply to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) after the Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan refused to release him for health reasons.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 11, 2018, Abulfaz Bunyadov, paralyzed after being wounded by law enforcers in a special operation in Nardaran, was found guilty of terrorism. The court sentenced him to 15 years in prison.

Bakhruz Bairamov, a Bunyadov's advocate, has pointed to the "critical state of health" of his client. He urged the SC to take into account Bunyadov's state of health, stressing that "punishment should not cause physical harm to human health."

However, the SC failed to heed these arguments and dismissed the defence's motion; therefore it intends to appeal to the ECtHR, the advocate has concluded.
