Top-ranking law enforcer accused of murdering Armenian activist

Gegam Petrosyan, the former deputy commander of the police, the chief of the police headquarters, is charged with murder that was committed during clashes in Yerevan on March 1 and 2, 2008, investigators reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 5, Gegam Petrosyan was detained on suspicion of the willful murder of demonstrator Zakar Ovannisyan during the clashes in Yerevan on March 1-2.

The clashes of demonstrators with policemen broke out on March 1 and 2, 2008, in Yerevan, after the dispersal of the oppositional rally, which disagreed with the outcomes of the presidential election, when Serzh Sargsyan was elected. 10 people perished in clashes, and over 250 others were injured.

Gegam Petrosyan has been charged under the article on murder, the "Sputnik-Armenia" reports today with reference to Marina Ogadjanyan, the press secretary of the Special Investigating Service of Armenia.

According to Marina Ogadjanyan, the request for the arrest of Gegam Petrosyan was submitted to the court.

So far, no comments from agents of Gegam Petrosyan have been reported concerning the charge brought against him.

Meanwhile, on June 5, an advocate of Gegam Petrosyan challenged the decision on the detention of his client, the "News.am" reports today.
