Chechnya: Ramadan passes amid promotion of Kadyrov Fund

In the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Chechen republic's mass media are constantly reporting about the charity events held by the Akhmat Kadyrov Fund. This is a typical activeness of the Fund during Ramadan, although such a scale is not typical for charitable funds in other Muslim regions of Russia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this year, the fasting Muslim month of Ramadan began on May 6, and the end of it – the celebration of Uraza Bayram – is on June 4-6.

On May 22, a fire destroyed the house of the Idirzaev family in the city of Shali. "The Akhmat-Khadji Kadyrov Fund took upon itself all the costs associated with the treatment of the girl injured in the fire," said an official of the district administration.

On May 27, two reports were shown in TV on how the Kadyrov Fund allocated foodstuffs to poor residents of the Shatoi and Oktiabrsky Districts of Grozny. On May 28, a story was shown about the Fund's helping children in a suburb of Damascus.

Each report featured large-scale charity events held by the Kadyrov Fund during the month of Ramadan in Chechnya and beyond. In every case, recipients of the help invariably thanked the head of the region, his mother and the Kadyrov Fund.

Ruslan Kutaev, the head of the Assembly of Caucasian Nations, believes that this is the typical activeness of the Kadyrov Fund during the month of Ramadan.

Aset Malsagova, a Chechen human rights defender, also believes that this activeness of the Fund is not related to criticism of the authorities.

In his turn, Mikhail Roschin, an Orientalist, has stated that such large-scale events during Ramadan are not typical for charitable foundations in the Muslim regions of Russia.
