Two persons arrested after assault on Samvel Babayan's supporters in Armenia

People suspected of the armed attack against supporters of Samvel Babayan, the former Minister of Defence of Nagorno-Karabakh, were charged with illegal acquisition of weapons and ammunition. The court arrested them for two months, the spokesperson of the Investigating Committee of Armenia reports today.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 30, the office of Samvel Babayan claimed an armed attack on its supporters on the highway Sevan-Martuni in Armenia. Agents of Samvel Babayan noted that the attack could be organized by persons from the environment of possible rival of Samvel Babayan in the future presidential election in Nagorno-Karabakh. The mention of the Araik Arutyunyan's name in connection with the incident is a political manipulation, emphasizes the "Free Homeland" Party headed by Araik Arutyunyan.

Today, the court has granted the investigators' request for the arrest of two defendants for a period of two months, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Naira Arutyunyan, the head of the Information and PR Department of the Investigating Committee of Armenia.

"In total, four suspects are being prosecuted in the case. The other two have not been charged at the moment. They signed recognizance not to leave," explained Naira Arutyunyan.

She has also added that the statement about the political background of the case is not true. "The investigators have got irrefutable evidence that the case is of domestic nature. However, at the moment, no details can be disclosed in connection with the secrecy of the investigation," explained the spokesperson of the Investigating Committee of Armenia.
