Chechnya says farewell to actor Dagun Omaev

Dagun Omaev, a well-known Chechen actor died at the age of 77 after a long illness. The tezet (commemoration) was attended by hundreds of people. Residents of the republic called Omaev "the nation's pride."

Dagun Omaev performed more than 40 roles; he was the Merited Artist of Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia and Abkhazia, and a People's Artist of the Russian Federation. He died on April 30, the "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" reports.

"Dagun Omaev was not only an outstanding creative figure, who dedicated 58 years of his life to the work in theatre and cinema, but also a deputy and a well-known public figure. He was respected and loved not only by residents of our republic, but also of other regions," the Ministry of Culture of Chechnya has declared.

According to the residents of Chechnya interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, films with Omaev's participation have always been very popular.

"Persons like Omaev, the world-famous dancer Makhmud Esambaev, the singer Imran Usmanov have really left a great trace in the history of our nation. My generation grew up on the films with Omaev," said Rosa Sadulaeva, a resident of Grozny.

Makhmud Esambaev is Chechen ballet dancer and an actor. Imran Usmanov is a Chechen singer, poet and composer.
