Tbilisi court arrests foreign woman suspected of child trafficking

The City Court of Tbilisi pronounced against a Ukrainian woman, suspected of child trafficking, the pre-trial restriction measure in the form of arrest. The spokesperson of the Prosecutor's Office states that investigators have a document confirming the charge.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the woman was detained on April 20 and suspected that she was travelling with minor children to Abkhazia to sell them. Ten children who were travelling with the suspected woman were registered under her surname, but four of them were born in the same year, 2017, and that fact attracted the law enforcers' attention. According to the police, on April 8, the woman arrived in Georgia from Russia with 11 minors. The investigation into the fate of the eleventh child is underway.

The detainee insists that she is a mother of all the children she brought with her to Georgia. The woman explained that seven children were born by surrogate mothers, and the youngest child was born in the territory of the United States, where the detainee's family lived for some time, and he was a citizen of the USA. The detainee stated that she was travelling to Abkhazia to join her spouse, a well-known Ukrainian businessman. Besides, according to the woman, the eleventh child died in Russia as a result of an accident.

At the today's hearings, the Tbilisi City Court dismissed the motion filed by the defence of the Ukrainian citizen with a request to leave her without a pre-trial restriction measure.

After the today's court hearing, prosecutor Teya Giorgadze said that the investigators had already succeeded in proving that the defendant had sold one minor, a 9-month-old boy, in Russia.
