Abkhaz activist released from police after locals' protest

Djansukh Adleiba, the leader of the initiative group to close the landfill in Sukhumi, was detained in Abkhazia. Local residents went out to the rally in his defence; and after a few hours Adleiba was released.

On December 3, 2018, in Sukhumi, about a hundred people came out to protest against the operation of the local landfill. The neighbourhood with the landfill is a concern of over 30,000 Sukhumi residents, said Mr Adleiba. The protest has forced the authorities to start upgrading the solid waste landfill. There is no money to transfer the landfill to another place, officials have stated.

As written by the "Apsnylife.ru", on April 2, local residents, outraged by the detention of Adleiba, came out to rally in his defence, and also demanded to close the landfill, which continues expanding. Pungent smell is people's concern. The authorities cannot solve this problem for many years, the "Apsny.today" notes.
