Refugees from Azerbaijan complain about unsolved housing problems in Yerevan

The anniversary of Sumgait pogroms has reminded about the refugees' problems. More than 2000 of them have failed to receive Armenian citizenship, said Anahit Airapetyan, the press secretary of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office in Yerevan. Refugees told that for 30 years they could not solve the housing problems in their homeland.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that annually Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh commemorate victims of pogroms in Sumgait.

These pogroms broke out on 26-29, 1988. According to official data, 26 Armenians and six Azerbaijanis were killed; more than a hundred people were wounded.

Larisa Alaverdyan, the first ombudsperson of Armenia, the head of the organization "Against Legal Lawlessness", has treated the events in Sumgait as genocide. According to her version, the only thing that Armenia has done is providing refugees from Azerbaijan with housing.

From 1988 to 1992, about 360,000 Armenians moved from Azerbaijan to Armenia, said Anahit Airapetyan, the press secretary of the UNHCR Office.

From 2500 and 3000 families still have no housing, said Karmen Manucharyan, the head of the refugees' division of the migration service at the Ministry of Territorial Administration of Armenia.

After the events in Sumgait, Sofia Buniyatova with her husband and children moved to Yerevan. After the pogroms, her neighbours began hinting to her that "it was time for her to leave Baku." According to her story, she could not get a job, and her sons did not receive a higher education.

Greta Danielyan told that her family moved to Yerevan from Baku in 1989. Since then, they could not solve their housing problem.
