Kabardino-Balkaria: Russian language courses organized for Syrian Circassians

In Kabardino-Balkaria, Russian language courses have been set up for the Circassians from Syria; 50 persons have already signed up to attend the training.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Circassians-repatriates began returning to their historic homeland, including Kabardino-Balkaria, in 2012, when the active phase of the war began in Syria. According to Asker Sokht, the chairman of the "Adyge-Khase" organization in Krasnodar, the repatriates from Syria, who received the right to Russian citizenship, face excessively strict requirements for knowledge of the Russian language and literature.

Adygs (Circassians) is the common name of the united people in Russia and abroad, divided into Kabardians, Circassians and Adygs. In Russia, Adygs live in Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, and North Ossetia.

According to the Ministry on Interaction with Civil Society Institutions and National Affairs of Kabardino-Balkaria, 95% of the Syrian citizens residing in the republic speak the Kabardian language, and only 25% of them speak Russian.

To solve this problem, the ministry has organized training courses for 50 compatriots from Syria under the programme "Russian as a foreign language based on knowledge of the Kabardian language," the TASS writes.

Following the results of training, trainees will receive respective certificates.
