Ilham Aliev orders to allocate money to shehids' families after protests

One-time compensations will be paid additionally to families of 2725 Azerbaijani soldiers and policemen, who perished in the course of the Karabakh conflict. The country's authorities have made this decision after the protest action organized by family members of the servicemen who had been denied compensations.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in the spring of 2018, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliev signed a decree on the payment of one-time compensations to the families of those, who perished or went missing during the warfare of 1991-1997. The amount of compensation is about 6450 US dollars. On November 6, a march was held in Baku, at which the marchers expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that they were denied compensations for the death of their relatives.

According to an employee of the state insurance company "Azersygorta", in the 1990s, the heirs of some of the perished soldiers received compensations in the amount of 50,000-200,000 manats, and they are not eligible for any repeated compensation. On January 1, 2006, Azerbaijan denominated its currency, and the old 5000 manats were equated to one "new" manat. Thus, the amount of the 1990s' compensation ranged in 10-40 current manats (5.9-23.6 US dollars).

On January 28, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev met a group of family members of perished military servicemen, and signed a resolution to amend the decree on allocation of compensations. Now, the provisions thereof will also cover those heirs of perished soldiers, who had already received compensations in the amount of less than 11,000 manats (6490 US dollars).
