Protesting workers block road in Armenia

On Thursday, December 27, the workers of the companies, engaged in building the North-South motor transport corridor, blocked the road to Yerevan in the Aragatsotn Region of Armenia for four hours.

The route "North - South" should go across Armenia and Georgia to the Black Sea and further to European countries.

The builders of the Yerevan-Tallinn highway claim that they had not been paid since August, the "News Armenia" reports. They threaten to continue their protests should their demands be not met, the "Radio Azatutyun" reports.

David Gevorgyan, the Governor of the Aragatsotn Region, has called on the protesters to solve the problem in court. However, the builders said they could not wait for the court judgement, which can consider their claim for several months.

The salary was unpaid to 700 workers, Mr Gevorgyan said.

The government of Armenia has assured that it had fulfilled all its obligations and has no relation to wage debts.

Meanwhile, the workers complained about their difficult financial situation.

"I have a bank loan, which I cannot repay because the non-payment of salary. After the New Year holidays, the case will be brought to the court, and I see no way out," one of the builders said on air of the "Radio Azatutyun".
