In Georgia, five oppositionists beaten over a week

During the week, in Djavakheti, five members of opposition parties were beaten with batons. All cases involve the name of MP Enzel Mkoyan, a member of the ruling "Georgian Dream" Party, but he himself has denied involvement in the incidents, the "JAMnews" reported on November 8.

In Akhalkalaki, unidentified persons attacked Remik Pogosyan, a local resident, who supported the opposition. He was hospitalized with injuries and brain concussion. Remik Pogosyan was attacked after he had been interviewed by the "Rustavi-2" TV Company. In his interview, he criticized the activities of the majority member of the Georgian parliament, reports the "JAMnews" in its article "Five beaten oppositionists in a week: the Djavakheti region in Georgia turns into a political 'hot spot'" published on November 8.

Meanwhile, according to the edition, on October 30, in Akhalkalaki, four members of the election office of Grigol Vashadze, a candidate from the united opposition "Strength in Unity", were also beaten with the use of batons.

"All four victims have got serious injuries, and they still stay in the hospital. On November 2, the Prosecutor's Office charged five persons with group beatings. Three of them are relatives of Enzel Mkoyan, a member of the ruling 'Georgian Dream' Party. The court released all the detainees on bail of 3000 laris [a little more than 1000 US dollars]," the article reports.

After the MPs had been beaten, the opposition demanded to suspend the mandate of Enzel Mkoyan, but was categorically refused.

In his turn, Enzel Mkoyan has denied any involvement in the incidents.
