One killed in action

A federal serviceman was killed in a clash with a group of rebels in Chechnya's mountainous southern district of Vedeno.

This is what the republican military commandant's office said. According to the source, a Russian Defence Ministry unit was conducting reconnaissance and search operations when it was fired at by rebels in a wood.

"Servicemen from a Defence Ministry unit conducting reconnaissance and search operations in a wood in Chechnya's Vedeno district were suddenly attacked yesterday evening. A contract serviceman was killed in the skirmish with the group of rebels," said the interlocutor. "Response fire scattered the gangsters, so they hid in the forest."
