In Nalchik, dormitory tenants appeal to rights defenders for help

At a roundtable held on May 15 at the Kabardino-Balkarian Public Human Rights Centre, tenants of a dormitory located in 10 in Ashurov Street in Nalchik complained about the difficult living conditions, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

The tenants said that the building in which they lived was built in 1969. In many families, four or five people live in one room over an area of 18 square meters, and sometimes even less. In the morning, there are lines to one toilet at the end of the corridor, to the bathroom, and to the kitchen. The tenants noted that they have been living for 25-30 years like that, with children already with grown up.

"Children have no place to learn lessons. They do not have their own corner," said Oksana Zelitezheva. Together with her husband and three schoolchildren, she occupies one room of 18 square meters.

Madina Akhmetova's family of four occupies a room of 12 square meters.

Fatima Tazova lives in the dormitory with her son, who is 27 years old. She noted that the son cannot marry because of the living conditions.

"Our problem should be reported to the authorities. We belong to the vulnerable segments of the population. So, the state is obliged to help people like us," said Fatima Tazova.

The woman reported that for a long time, the tenants of the dormitory appeals to the authorities in an attempt to draw attention to their problems, but in return they get only formal replies.

Residents of the dormitory asked the Human Rights Centre for assistance in resolving the problem of their resettlement, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
