Case on violence against demonstrators in Yerevan closed

Investigators have closed the case on the use of violence by law enforcers against activists and journalists in the Sary Tag District of Yerevan. According to the investigators, there are no defendants in the case.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at night on July 30, 2016, in the Sary Tag District, clashes between demonstrators and policemen occurred, during which journalists were also injured.

Andrias Gukasyan, the leader of the "Constructive Party of Armenia", has reported that on September 25, he received a letter from the Special Investigating Service (SIS) of Armenia. The investigators informed him of the closure of the case on the use of violence against peaceful demonstrators in the Sary Tag District on July 29, 2016. The closure of the case is explained by the absence of the accused.

"In connection with that, I post photos of the policemen in civilian clothes who used violence against citizens on that day," wrote Andrias Gukasyan on his Facebook page in an entry under the heading "Shame to SIS".

At night on July 30, 2016, Andrias Gukasyan was detained after a march in support of the unit "Sasna Tsrer" (Daredevils of Sassoun). Andrias Gukasyan was initially accused of organizing unrest, but in June 2017, he was also charged with seizing the building, taking hostages, and carrying weapons. Andrias Gukasyan pleaded not guilty. On May 7, he was released under recognizance not to leave the place.
