Policemen reject their participation in Oyub Titiev's detention

Most of the law enforcers from the Kurchaloi ROVD (District Interior Division), who were questioned in the case against Oyub Titiev, the head of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" in Grozny, stated that they did not see him at the police station, they were not acquainted with the rights defender, and they did not take part in his detention and bringing him to the police department.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Shali City Court is considering Oyub Titiev's case since July 19 this year.

On August 27, at the court hearing in the Oyub Titiev's case, the court questioned 17 prosecution witnesses ‑ law enforcers from the Kurchaloi ROVD, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports from the courtroom.

16 witnesses said that they did not know Oyub Titiev and they did not participate in his detention. Only witness Salambek Akhmedov stated that he registered Oyub Titiev when he had been taken to the on duty unit of the Kurchaloi ROVD.

Advocate Pyotr Zaikin believes that the court hearing has revealed the facts of falsification in the Oyub Titiev's case.

"The defence arguments about the involvement of the policemen in the fabrication of evidence in the case were not verified. The actions carried out by the investigator included drawing up of the same protocols for questioning of the policemen who did not even read what they signed. Today, there was a vivid example of the above, when a witness stated that he was a regular policeman and not a driver of a police patrol car, but the questioning record indicated the personal data of an absolutely different person who was a driver and who used a police car. This is not a mistake, (this is) a sign that there were similar protocols, and people signed them without looking through and reading them. The investigator did nothing to verify the Oyub Titiev's arguments, but did everything to confirm only the prosecution's version," advocate Pyotr Zaikin told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
