Kocharyan's supporters demand to protect court from pressure

Supporters of the second president of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, accused within the case of dispersal of protest in 2008, gathered in front of the residence of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and asked him to protect judges from pressure.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 14, activists who were protesting against Kocharyan's release from custody disrupted his press conference. After that, they marched to the buildings of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) and the Supreme Judicial Council of Armenia, demanding the dismissal of the judge, who had liberated the former president of Armenia from custody.

Robert Kocharyan was accused of overthrowing the constitutional order in connection with the dispersal of protest actions in Yerevan on March 1-2, 2008. He was arrested on July 27 this year. On August 13, the Court of Appeal overturned the decision to place Robert Kocharyan behind bars, referring to his inviolability as a former president of Armenia.

During rally in front of the Premier's residence, supporters of Kocharyan stretched banners with appeals in the Armenian and English languages: "Mr Pashinyan, don't let pressure be put on justice!"

One can not allow a group of people to violate the Armenian Constitution and the human right to free movement, the right to the freedom of speech and the freedom of self-expression, one of the protesters has stated.

"This small action says that we have come with peace; and let it be perceived as a request to Pashinyan to act as a guarantor of the Constitution. Who will try to prevent it, we'll stand next to you and protect you. But if we see that you go against the Constitution and the law, we'll use our right to civil disobedience and come out to a struggle of a completely different kind," a supporter of Robert Kocharyan has addressed Nikol Pashinyan.

  • Rights defenders treat case of missing Movsar Umarov as typical for Chechnya
