Zaur Dadaev declares hunger strike in penal colony

Zaur Dadaev, sentenced in the case on the Boris Nemtsov's murder, has declared a hunger strike to protest against his unjustified placement in a punishment cell, his advocate reported.

On July 13, 2017, the Moscow District Military Court sentenced five Chechen natives accused of killing of Boris Nemtsov. Zaur Dadaev, who was considered by investigators to be the gunman, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Zaur Dadaev was threatened with a transfer to a penal colony with more tough conditions of detention after he had refused to undergo an interrogation on a polygraph and provide his private records to law enforcers, a source reported on July 22.

The Zaur Dadaev's hunger strike was reported by his advocate Roza Magomedova, a lawyer from the "Civic Assistance" Committee.

Roza Magomedova has noted that Zaur Dadaev and several other prisoners went on a hunger strike in connection with the unjustified, in their opinion, placement in the punishment cell (ShIZO), the advocate has written today on her Facebook page.

According to the advocate's information, in the penal colony where Zaur Dadaev serves his punishment, Muslim prisoners have massively declared hunger strike in protest against the decision of the prison administration to close a mosque. 17 prisoners went on a hunger strike because of the closure of the mosque, Roza Magomedova wrote. The advocate did not specify the date when Zaur Dadaev declared his hunger strike.
