Tourists report sewage discharge into Gelendzhik bay

On the central beach of the city Gelendzhik, a sewage discharge occurred; for about an hour, the sewage was discharged into the sea; it was accompanied by an unpleasant smell, after which bathing was banned, tourists have reported. However, the Gelendzhik administration explained that the bathing ban was introduced because of a sharp drop in water temperature.

The holidaymakers on the central embankment of Gelendzhik told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that they felt an unpleasant smell at about 6:00 a.m. on July 6; and it became stronger all the time.

"In an hour, the smell became so disgusting that it became impossible to breathe. Then, we noticed that something was discharged into the sea. Apparently, it was a failure of the sewage network," said Tamara Gundarova.

According to Irina Morgunova, two hours after people started complaining about the unpleasant smell on the beach, an emergency team arrived.

"They immediately forbade everyone to swim and bathe, and announced by loudspeakers that the ban was caused by low water temperature and a strong wind. But the water had been cold for several days; and people were swimming," the woman said.

The Gelendzhik administration told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the bathing restrictions had to do with cold sea water and a strong wind. According to the administration, an accident had really occurred in the sewage network, but no guck got into the sea.
