In Nalchik, conflict around Sheep Wool Market grows

More than 100 women selling handcrafts made of sheep's wool refused to pay fees to an owner of the Sheep Wool Market for the right to sell their goods and demanded to return the market to the Nalchik authorities.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that starting from October 2017, entrepreneurs are seeking to return the Sheep Wool Marketplace to the municipal property fund.

Starting from June 1, more than 100 sellers from the Sheep Wool Market refused to pay fees for the right to sell their goods at the market, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by a woman participating in the protest action.

"We have stated that we will not pay any money to any private person. The market was municipal and it should be municipal," the woman says. She has noted that the market administration does not enter into negotiations with the protesters.

Today, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has been informed by Tamara Gerieva, a member of the board of the NGO "Council of Elders of the Balkar People", that lawyers from the NGO "World Assembly of the Karachay-Balkar People" prepared a complaint to the court to return the market to the state property fund.

According to Tamara Gerieva, on June 7, during the "Direct Line" with Vladimir Putin, entrepreneurs also recorded and posted on Facebook a video appeal to the President, in which they requested him to leave the market in municipal property fund and register it as a historical and ethnographic centre of folk crafts. So far, no response has followed to the appeal, reported Tamara Gerieva.
