Georgian PM refuses to resign

Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the head of the Government of Georgia (Prime Minister), who was driven away by protesters from the action at the parliament, has rejected the demand to the Govt to resign, and promised to the relatives of the murdered schoolchildren a new inquiry into the case on June 1. The protesters expressed their distrust of the police and repeated the demand to the Govt to resign.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the mass protest action began in Tbilisi on May 31, after the court judgement on the murder case of two schoolboys. Their relatives displeased with the verdict, blamed for it the country's Chief Prosecutor Irakli Shotadze, and he resigned. Then, the protesters demanded the resignation of the entire Government of Georgia.

On May 31, the court acquitted one teenager accused of killing the schoolboys, and changed the accusation of the other one into a softer article. Two schoolboys were fatally stabbed in a fight in Tbilisi on December 1, 2017.

Giorgi Kvirikashvili has stated that he is ready to resign at any time if this would benefit the country, but "today such a moment has not come yet." According to his version, in Georgia "the power always stood side by side with the people."

He promised to take the inquiry process under his personal control.

Meanwhile, Zaza Saralidze, the father of one of the stabbed schoolboys, has stated that the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) ignored his appeal.
