Tbilisi residents tell about their attitude to the Independence Day

Georgia has held large-scale celebrations in honour of the 100th anniversary of the First Republic. Residents of Tbilisi consider this day the most important for their country.

On May 26, Georgia celebrated the Independence Day and the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the Georgian Democratic Republic. The independent Georgian state existed until March 1921, when the power passed over to Bolsheviks.

To mark the jubilee, Georgia welcomed Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission, the press service of the Georgian government has reported.

"The 1918 Constitution remains an example today; we have a great history from the viewpoint of European integration. The First Republic was heading for the West," Mikhail Djanelidze, the Georgian Foreign Minister, has sated on air of the "Imedi" TV Company.

May 26 is the best day of the year, since the First Democratic Republic was created, said Giorgi, a Tbilisi resident.

This is not an ordinary holiday, but a day that signifies the freedom of the nation, said Akakiy, another resident of the Georgian capital.
