Oppositional Deputy shot dead in Western Georgia

The Svaneti police are searching for a man who assassinated Lomar Niguriani, a Deputy of the Sakrebulo of the village of Mestia and the head of the district branch of the "United National Movement" (UNM) Party.

The murder occurred today in Mestia. According to the Georgian MIA, a 39-year-old man fired several shots at Lomar Niguriani, the 49-year-old Deputy of the local Assembly (Sakrebulo). At elections to the Sakrebulo, Mr Niguriani was the first in the UNM's list, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

The police treat a personal conflict as a preliminary version of the murder. The Deputy was shot dead in his own car; a land issue could become the cause of the quarrel, the "Georgia-Online" suggests.

Lomar Niguriani was cleaning the roof of his house from snow, when he was shot dead from a neighbouring house, the "InterPressNews" reports its version of the murder.
