Meydan TV: human traffickers benefit from domestic violence in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani women, who fell victim to human traffickers, had been subjected to domestic violence in their families, says the Meydan TV's report "Human Trafficking: The Overlooked and Exploited Women of Azerbaijan - Part I" dated December 5, 2017.

The Meydan TV has reminded about the report of the US State Department on trafficking in human beings published in 2017, which stated that Azerbaijan was a source, transit point and destination country for trafficking in men, women and children.

The report of the US State Department stated that corruption was preventing the fight on human trafficking in Azerbaijan. "Corruption remains a systemic problem, and the Azerbaijani government fails to report about any charges put forward against officials who help traffickers," says the report posted on the website of the US State Department.

The Meydan TV has quoted Matanat Azizova, the head of the Women's Crisis Centre, who said that she saw a certain trend in women-victims of human trafficking in Azerbaijan: "All of them had fallen victim to domestic violence."

In Azerbaijan, domestic and sexual violence is associated with human trafficking for several reasons, the author of the report concludes. "Infinite mockeries force women to leave their homes; however, they have no money and easily fall victim to exploitation; they are more likely to change residence for work and agree to any 'dirty work' for lower salary, "the author of the report has emphasized.
