Azerbaijan advocates preserving Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine

Azerbaijan supports the settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of the existence of two states with the capital of Palestine in East Jerusalem, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) commented on the US President's statement on the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

On December 6, US President Donald Trump said that "it was time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel." He also said that he ordered to begin preparations for the relocation of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which could take from three to four years, the Radio Liberty reports. According to it, in 1995, the Congress adopted the law on the embassy in Jerusalem and urged the federal government to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem and recognize that the city was the capital of Israel. The law was confirmed by the Senate six months ago.

Azerbaijan supports the peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and "stands for its settlement on the basis of the existence of two states with the capital of Palestine in East Jerusalem," reports today Khikmet Gadjiev, the official spokesman of the Azerbaijani MFA.

"We call upon all parties involved in the problem to observe the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council," resumed Khikmet Gadjiev as quoted by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
