Killer of Georgian MP released under amnesty

Giorgi Barateli, sentenced in 2007 to 26 years of imprisonment for killing Guram Sharadze, a member of the Georgian Parliament, was released under amnesty. This was reported by advocate Mamuka Nozadze.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Guram Sharadze was killed in Tbilisi in May 2007. In the course of his detention, Giorgi Barateli was wounded when he tried to render resistance to the police.

In the early 1990s, Guram Sharadze was an associate of Zviad Gamsakhurdiya, the first Georgian President. He actively opposed religious sects, the "Echo of the Caucasus" reports.

In 2007, the Tbilisi court found Giorgi Barateli guilty of wilful murder, as well as an attempted wilful murder for assaulting a policeman, intentional infliction of slight damage to the health of a doctor and illegal purchase, possession and carrying of weapons, the "News-Georgia" reports.

Earlier, Giorgi Barateli has mentioned revenge as a motive of the murder, since he was not paid for his job. In 2007, daughter Rusudan Sharadze stated that the family members treated the murder as political.
