Kabardino-Balkaria marks 190th anniversary of accession to Russia

Stones from Balkarian villages, a horse made of straw, kitchen utensils and a record shashlik (shish kebab) were shown to residents of Kabardino-Balkaria at the folk festival dedicated to the 190^th anniversary of Balkaria's accession to Russia.

On January 11, 1827, the commander-in-chief of Russian tsarist troops accepted the oath of the Balkar-Digor deputation, which had applied for accession to Russia. In their petition, Balkars and Digors asked to retain their ancient rights to own the land and preserve their folk customs, free practice of Islam and proceedings under the Sharia law.

On October 21, 2017, 500 kilograms of meat were used to cook the giant shashlik. Its length made 213 meters; it was cooked in a meadow located between the villages of Kashkhatau and Babugent. In Nalchik, the capital of the republic, everyone was treated with pilaf, cooked in large boilers in the square in front of the State Concert Hall.

Tents were set up along the periphery of the square, in which they demonstrated Balkarian felt carpets, stones from mountain Balkarian villages, national costumes and kitchen utensils.
