Azerbaijani opposition activist reports being expelled from his university

On October 6, Eldar Guseinov, Associate Professor of the Department of Information and Economic Technologies at the Azerbaijan State Economic University (ASEU), a member of the Presidium for the Supreme Mejlis of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was dismissed from his position.

"I was dismissed without any warning from the university, in which I worked for 28 years," Eldar Guseinov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to the Assistant Professor, earlier, he had also been told about the need to choose between his membership in the PFPA and his workplace. "This time the question was tough. This happened after a rally of September 23. I said I would not give up my political views. The leaders of my department forced several employees to defame me. They wrote that I allegedly insulted teachers, and after that an order was issued for my dismissal," Eldar Guseinov stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that a rally held on September 23 under the slogan: "Stop Corruption, Freedom for Political Prisoners!" was attended by about 3000 people. The rally participants accused the Azerbaijani authorities of corruption and demanded to investigate reports on withdrawal of about three billion US dollars from the country for money laundering.

Eldar Guseinov has voiced his intention to defend his rights. "I will go to the court and demand to cancel the illegal order on my dismissal. If the Azerbaijani courts do not restore me at work, then I will turn to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)," Eldar Guseinov has concluded.
