Baku resident exposes problem of cancer patients and book crisis in Azerbaijan

Baku resident Gurban Mamedov sells books to collect money to ensure medical treatment for his mother.

After five years of trading books on the streets of Baku, 29-year-old Gurban Mamedov decided to collect money for the medical treatment of his mother whom doctors diagnosed with the third stage of a malignant tumour in January.

The man decided to treat his mother abroad, in Iran. The medical treatment required 15,000 US dollars, and the bookseller did not have the needed amount. Gurban Mamedov decided to hold a charitable action and to invite people to buy books, with the proceeds from the sale to go for medical treatment.

Political figures, activists, entrepreneurs, athletes and show business stars decided to help Gurban Mamedov.

Gurban Mamedov was able to collect the necessary amount within the period from May to September 2017. However, the medical treatment finally took more money, so the man continues the action.

His campaign drew public attention to the problems that became acute for Azerbaijan, the "Meydan TV" reports.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" has reported about the growing number of cancer patients in Azerbaijan. In 2010, 8119 people were diagnosed with malignant tumours, and that is 466 people more in comparison with 2009.

Only a few book publishing houses remained in the country, the "Meydan TV" quotes Shakhbaz Khuduogly, the director of the publishing house "Ganun", as saying. He has also noted the state stipulate no privileges for book businesses.
