Armenian activist stops hunger strike in prison

Today, the convicted activist Hayk Kyuregyan has stopped his hunger strike, stating human rights violations in Armenia and a threat to country’s independence.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Kyuregyan went on a hunger strike on September 13.

On September 15, 2015, he was sentenced to nine years in prison on charges of shooting near the courthouse during a session on the case of members of the oppositional "Million Mask March". He was found guilty of wounding five policemen from his pistol. Kyuregyan’s advocates sent a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

During his hunger strike, Hayk Kyuregyan was kept in a solitary cell of the "Armavir" Prison. According to a source from the Penal Correction Department of the Armenian Ministry of Justice (MoJ), doctors assess the convict’s health condition as normal.

As reported by Armenak Kyuregyan, Hayk’s father, his son has blamed for "the plight in Armenia" on President Serzh Sargsyan, who "has turned the country into his shop, where politicians and ordinary citizens are bought and sold."

Also, the statement stresses human rights violations in Armenia and a threat to its sovereignty. Armenak Kyuregyan has added that his son called for consolidation to protect the country's independence.
