Police officer commits suicide

Sergeant Aleksei Ivashin, a 25-year-old riot police officer from the Republic of Mari El, Russia, committed suicide in Chechnya's Grozny district.

The Mari El Ministry of Internal Affairs told Interfax this happened at about 4.45 pm on 5 May at a checkpoint not far from Goriacheistochnenskoye. While on duty, the officer walked a few metres away from the checkpoint and shot his AK-47 submachine gun in his head.
