Prisoner suffering from "crystal man" disease to be returned to Kalmyk penal colony

The medical officers' commission has come to the conclusion that a rare genetic disease of Yevgeny Shevkoplyas sentenced for fraud does not prevent his serving of punishment at a penal colony in Kalmykia. According to his advocate, the medical officers' conclusion will be challenged at court. There are not enough conditions for the wheelchair user in a penal colony to serve himself, noted the director of the "Crystal People" Foundation.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 11, the Maikop City Court prolonged the sentence for Yevgeny Shevkoplyas from 3 years and 1 month to 4 years and 3 months of imprisonment in the penal colony. Rights defender Sergey Petryakov believes that it is not only inhumane, but also extremely impractical to keep seriously ill prisoners in penal colonies.

Advocate Aniet Dybagova has noted that it is necessary to carry out a number of examinations to make an objective conclusion about the health state of Yevgeny Shevkoplyas.

A "crystal man" disease combines a group of genetic diseases based on violation of bone tissue formation. A person from birth is prone to frequent fractures of bones even from minor impacts.

According to the advocate, on August 10, Yevgeny Shevkoplyas will be transported from Adygea to the penal colony in Kalmykia.

In Russia, there are almost no specialists for medical treatment of such a disease, noted Elena Mescheryakova, the director of the "Fragile People" Charitable Foundation.
