Three natives of Chechnya convicted in Poland for financing militants

Today, the District Court of the Polish city of Białystok has sentenced four Chechens who were accused of raising money for militants.

Investigators have stated that during the period from May to October 2014, the four men raised about 9000 US dollars for the purchase of military uniforms and equipment for the militants of the terrorist organization “Islamic State” (IS), banned in Russia, who are at war in Syria and Iraq, the TASS reports today with reference to the Polish News Agency.

The court eventually found three defendants guilty of supporting the grouping "Imarat Kavkaz", banned in Russia, but not the IS. The defendants and their advocate demanded an acquittal, arguing that the money was collected for "fighters for the independence of Chechnya, the supporters of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, not for the "Imarat Kavkaz," the TVN-24 reports. One of the defendants was found innocent by the court.
