ECtHR accepts Varvara Karaulova's complaint for consideration

The complaint filed by Varvara Karaulova and communicated by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) states numerous violations committed during the preliminary investigation and claims an unreasonably cruel verdict. This was reported by an advocate of Varvara Karaulova.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in March, the Russian Supreme Court (SC) refused to grant the defence's request to acquit Varvara Karaulova, sentenced to 4.5 years of imprisonment under Article 205.5 (preparation for involvement in activities of a terrorist community) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The defence announced the intentions to appeal against the verdict and also to file a complaint to the ECtHR about the violations committed during the trial.

According to advocate Igor Zuber, the Strasbourg   Court accepted for consideration a complaint filed by Alexandra Ivanova (Varvara Karaulova), a former student of the Moscow State University (MSU). Igor Zuber represents the Varvara Karaulova's interests at the ECtHR.

"The European Court of Human Rights has communicated our complaint. The Russian government is to submit its position to the European   Court until September 15," the "Interfax" quotes Igor Zuber as saying today.

According to Karaulova's advocate, the complaint refers to numerous violations of his client's rights committed at the stage of the preliminary investigation and also claims an unreasonably cruel verdict, the RBC reports.
