Georgian authorities deny introduction of school lessons in sex education

In Georgia, after protests against innovations in the school curriculum, the Ministry for Education and Science reported that no topics on sexual education or mentioning of the LGBT community were planned to be included in school textbooks on the subject "Me and Society".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 7, about 40 people took part in an action organized by the NGO "Society for the Protection of Children's Rights" in Tbilisi. The activists protested against plans to change school textbooks given the interests of the LGBT community.

According to Mariam Chikobava, the chief of the National Curriculum Department at the Georgian Ministry for Education and Science, the new subject includes topics on healthy nutrition, physical activities, nature protection, peaceful conflict resolution, and entrepreneurship to develop basic economic skills for schoolchildren.

Mariam Chikobava has noted that school textbooks contain only several issues concerning the equality of people.

"There are, for example, questions: why and how should activities of all members of the family be appreciated? Why should schools provide equal opportunities and conditions for girls and boys?" emphasized Mariam Chikobava as quoted by the "InterPressNews".

According to the official, the standard content for school textbooks was discussed in detail with the patriarchate and teachers.
