Residents of Ingushetia celebrate 25th anniversary of republic's formation

The festive events in the Republic of Ingushetia, also attended by politicians from Moscow, have become a good occasion to look back how the present Republic of Ingushetia was formed and who contributed to its formation.

In 1921-1924, Ingushetia was a part of the Gorskaya ASSR (Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic). In 1934, without taking into account the people's opinion, Ingushetia was annexed to Chechnya and the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Region was formed (since 1936 the Chechen-Ingush ASSR). In 1944, the Chechen-Ingush ASSR was liquidated, and in 1957, it was partially restored. In 1991, Chechnya separated from Ingushetia. On June 4, 1992, the Russian President signed the decree "On the formation of the Ingush Republic".

"In Ingush cities, the authorities organized fairs of national cuisine, concerts with participation of people's artists of Ingushetia and creative teams from all over Northern Caucasus and other regions," reported the press service of the Permanent Mission of Ingushetia.

In 1991, Russian President Boris Yeltsin demanded to hold a referendum in Ingushetia to find out whether the Ingush people wished to have statehood within Russia. The majority of the Ingush natives voted for the formation of the sovereign Ingush republic within the Russian Federation on the lands of the Malgobek, Nazran, Sunzha, and Prigorodny Districts. This was reported by Beksolt Seinaroev, the former chairman of the People's Council of Ingushetia.

According to historians and human rights defender interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot", after the Chechen-Ingush ASSR had been liquidated, Ingushetia and Chechnya chose different ways for their development.
