Dagestani residents give more than 1500 historical photographs for exhibition "Portrait of the Nation"

Organizers of the exhibition "Dagestan: Portrait of the Nation" offered residents of the republic, who had in their family archives photos from the 19th and early 20th centuries to take part in the art project. As a result, the organizers received 1500 works, of which they selected for the exhibition more than 300. Besides, the exposition presents works from leading museums of Russia, Georgia, and the United States.

On June 22, the exhibition was opened in the Museum of the History of the city of Makhachkala. The exposition includes photos of auls (villages) and cities, ceremonial portraits of people of different nations and social layers, who lived in Dagestan in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

According to the organizers, for the first time, the exhibition presents the photo chronicle of the Dagestani pre-revolutionary life in such a volume.

"The unique photographic material was collected from archival and museum storages around the world, as well as from the family archives of Dagestani residents," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Zarema Dadaeva, the museum director and curator of the project.

She has also noted that the work on the project lasted 10 years and the project is a nationwide.
