Georgian political analysts doubt prospects of "Movement of Construction" Party

The new political party "Movement of Construction" established by David Usupashvili, the former Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, is still unknown to voters and will not be able to compete seriously with the influential parties at the forthcoming local government elections. This was stated by political analysts questioned by the "Caucasian Knot".

Earlier, on April 28, the former chairman of the Georgian Parliament announced the creation of a new opposition centrist party with the aim to win the parliamentary elections.

On October 29, 2016, David Usupashvili announced his resignation from the Republican Party because of his incompatibility with other party leaders.

According to David Usupashvili, in Georgia, activists should establish democratic institutions and "protect the country from the dangers that threaten it because of international complications." The country needs "a lot of professionals" for that.

Members of the new "Movement of Construction" Party intend to take part in the parliamentary elections in 2020 and at the upcoming elections to local self-administration agencies to be held this autumn.

At present, the new Party will not be able to compete with the ruling "Georgian Dream" Party, the opposition "United National Movement" (UNM) Party, and the "European Georgia" Party, which split from it. This opinion was expressed by Ramaz Sakvarelidze, a political analyst from the "Club of Independent Experts".

He has noted that some of the Party's members are "the old guard of Georgian politics, mixed with new faces from academic circles, the Georgian intelligentsia."

According to political analyst Zaal Anjaparidze, the Party is being built around David Usupashvili.
