Volgograd: tenant of destroyed house states compensation non-payment

Levon Varuzhan, a tenant of the house, destroyed in Volgograd by an explosion of domestic gas, who had survived the Spitak earthquake, complains about non-payment of compensation and problems with evacuation of his belongings; however, the Ministry for Emergencies (MfE) asserts that all the tenants have taken out their things out of ruined apartments.

On May 16, in the Sovietsky District of Volgograd, an explosion caused a collapse of a section of a four-storey house, killing four persons and causing hospitalization of 11 others.

According to calculations of the "Caucasian Knot", this explosion in the house located in University Avenue has become the fourth such case in Volgograd since 2011.

According to Levon Varuzhan, in 1988, his family suffered from the earthquake in Armenia; after which they moved to Volgograd. His son and grandchildren received Russian citizenship.

According to his story, after the explosion of domestic gas, his apartment "was completely undamaged."

"However, on May 17, we were not allowed to pick up our things; the belongings, left there, are worth 1.5 million roubles," Mr Varuzhan said.

According to the administration of Volgograd, 67 persons have received 10,000 roubles each; and 32 families – 50,000 roubles each.

The tenants of the fourth section of the house, where the Varuzhan family lived, "are not let to their apartments, because they are in the state of emergency," explained Dmitry Ulanov, a source from the Russian MfE’s Department for the Volgograd Region.
