Imposition of fine on International "Memorial" found legitimate

Today, the Moscow City Court (MCC) has upheld the fine of 300,000 roubles imposed on the International Historical-Educational, Charitable and Human Rights Society "Memorial" for its refusing to get registered as a "foreign agent".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 4, 2016, it became known that the Ministry of Justice of Russia had decided to include the International “Memorial” into the register of foreign agents. On December 7, 2016, the court fined the International “Memorial” by 300,000 roubles for violating the law on foreign agents.

"The judgment of the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow of December 7, 2016, on the attraction of the International ‘Memorial’ to administrative responsibility shall be left unchanged; and the appeal complaint shall be left without satisfaction," the “Interfax” quoted the MCC decision announced today.

The International "Memorial" will challenge the MCC’s decision, said Yan Rachinsky, a member of the board of the Society.

"We’ll complain to the cassation instance and add our complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)," he said.
